Today I am writing to you about:
Located at 411 Broadway; Gaslamp Quarter. Phone; 619.795.3800
I have one disclaimer: I forgot my camera. So unfortunately you get to see crappy cell phone pictures of the food. Sorry! Now on to the restaurant....
Named for a schooner captain who once hit the high seas with actor Sterling Hayden and his kids and absconded to Tahiti to write his autobiography.
" Stories of this enigmatic seafarer are told in virtually every port on the West Coast from Seattle to San Diego, describing him as “President of the Pacific Ocean.” Spike is best known for his adventurous voyage with the actor Sterling Hayden and their families ending in Tahiti in 1958, and chronicled in Hayden’s classic Sea Novel “The Wanderer.” As a “Seabee” Lieutenant in WWII, Spike fought in the bloody battle of Peleliu Island as depicted in the HBO mini-series “Pacific.” The restaurant Spike Africa’s pays homage to the memory of a true sailor, the mystique surrounding his adventurous life and the love he had for the ocean. An inviting place that mirrors the attributes of Spike himself, Spike Africa’s is a place for friends, great times and good food."
Spike Africa's is a new Gaslamp fish house who's catch phrase; "Eat Like a Sailor" is a great find! You can read more about Spike's story here: http://www.spikeafricas.com/the-story/spike-africa-the-story/.
Eat like a sailor is right! When you walk in, you notice that the decore is very "sailor" like.
With large ropes and ancient wood, you get the ambiance of being at sea.
The term "Fresh Fish" is not used loosely. They serve only the finest fish. You can bet if you order lobster, it is still alive and kicking until the order comes through.
They had a great price fix menu for restaurant week.
