Spicy Split Pea Soup

I got the idea for cutting the pepper into a Christmas tree from betterrecipes.com

I know everyone loves ham in their split pea soup. I don't. I don't like ruining a perfectly delicious vegetable soup with meat. My husband however... he loves it. So I am offering you both options here. I know a lot of your will be eating a big ham for Christmas. You can use the ham bone to make this soup and it adds a lot of flavor. If you cut up a jalepeno pepper and place it on top of the soup when you serve it, it adds heat and decoration.

2 cups green split peas
1 1/2 cup cut and peeled carrots
1 large chopped sweet onion
1 1/2 cups finely chopped celery
1 potato chopped
4 cups water
3 cups chicken broth
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 bay leaf
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Pepper
1 jalepeno pepper for garnish
*Optional ham bone and 2 cups chopped ham

Start off by prepping all of your ingredients.
Place all ingredients except the jalepeno in a large pot and let cook at medium temperature for 45 minutes.
Reduce heat to low and let simmer for another 30 minutes.
Garnish with the cut up pepper and salt and pepper.
